A tale as rich as chocolate, as clever as Ananse…
Ananse decided to work at night.
That was his advantage.
When the village quieted and the last fires dimmed to embers, he moved easily — past baskets of cassava, past goats settling into sleep, past the low murmur of elders finishing palm wine by the riverside.
The cocoa beans were fermenting.
Wooden boxes lined the edge of the compound, covered in banana leaves, heat rising softly from within. The smell was sharp now — sour-sweet, alive — nothing like the clean bitterness of roasting.
Ananse smiled.
“This is the moment,” he said. “Before it becomes something else.”
He lifted a corner of the leaves and leaned close. The beans hissed faintly.
Carefully, he rearranged them — top to bottom, outside to center. A clever adjustment. A shortcut.
“By morning,” he whispered, already congratulating himself, “you’ll be better.”
Satisfied, he slipped away before dawn.
But cocoa does not sleep alone.
By morning, the village was awake.
Women turned the beans with practiced rhythm, their hands darkened by pulp and heat. Smoke drifted from cooking fires. Ginger scraped softly against stone as spices were ground for the day.
Ananse arrived confidently.
And stopped.
The beans had changed — but not as he planned.
Some were sharp. Others flat. The balance was gone.
The woman tending the box sniffed once and frowned.
“Hwɛ,” she said quietly. Look.
Ananse straightened.
“Improved,” he offered.
She did not argue. She simply closed the leaves again.
“These won’t travel,” she said. “They’ll be used here.”
That afternoon, cocoa was ground close to home — thick, bitter, pressed slowly in the asanka. The drink was shared beneath the trees, no sugar added, no hurry allowed.
Ananse tasted it.
It was honest. Unimpressive. Complete.
He said nothing.
That night, he sat alone, listening to insects rise and fall, the river breathing nearby.
He had tricked the process.
The process, it seemed, had corrected him.
Had Ananse learned that some systems absorb interference without asking?
What happens when cocoa decides where it belongs?
Well… that is a story for another time.
