A tale as rich as chocolate, as clever as Ananse…

Midunu House was hushed in the afternoon heat.

Sunlight rested across the central table where truffles were being set in careful rows, their surfaces smooth, unhurried. The room smelled faintly of cocoa butter and citrus zest — brightness held in check.

Ananse perched nearby, watching closely.

“Rooibos + Honey,” he read.
“Lemongrass + Ginger.”
“Coconut Orange Blossom.”

He nodded slowly.

“Soft,” he said. “Comfortable.”

Then he leaned closer.

“And the rest?” he asked.

A chocolatier smiled. “That’s all.”

Ananse tilted his head. “You trust me with the table, but not the recipe?”

She did not answer.

Later, when the room emptied, Ananse searched anyway — beneath folded papers, inside drawers, behind jars.

Nothing.

So he guessed.

He tasted. Adjusted. Added warmth where there was already ease. Pushed brightness forward, certain more would be better.

When the truffles were served, guests paused.

“This feels heavier than before,” one said quietly.
“And less clear,” said another.

At the end of the table, the chocolatier lifted a Lemongrass + Ginger truffle, broke it cleanly in half, and placed the pieces side by side.

She looked at Ananse once.

“Daabi,” she said calmly. No.

“You can follow steps,” she continued, “but you can’t force understanding.”

Ananse said nothing.

For the first time, a door stayed closed — not locked, just refused.

Had Ananse learned the difference between access and entitlement?
Is refusal sometimes a form of care?
And what happens when knowledge decides to wait?
