Ananse & The Truffle He Tried to Improve

A tale as rich as chocolate, as clever as Ananse…

Midunu House was calm in a way that made Ananse uneasy.

The air was cool, steady — nothing rushed. Trays of truffles rested on the central table, their surfaces smooth, deliberate. Nearby, orange peel warmed briefly over a flame before being set aside, its bright oil scenting the room.

Ananse climbed up and read carefully.

“Wild Hibiscus.”
“Scent Leaf.”
“Preserved Lemon.”

He nodded.

“Ɛyɛ,” he said softly. Good.

Then he tilted his head.

“But not clever enough.”

When no one was watching, Ananse got to work.

He adjusted the order. Shifted emphasis. He nudged brightness forward, pushed restraint aside. Just enough to leave a fingerprint.

“Mepɔw so,” he whispered to himself. I’m testing something.

The tasting began.

Guests paused.

One leaned back. Another frowned gently.

“This feels… restless,” someone said.
“And louder than it needs to be,” said another.

Ananse bristled.

At the end of the table, a chocolatier lifted a Wild Hibiscus truffle, broke it cleanly, and placed the halves side by side.

She looked at Ananse once.

“Daabi,” she said quietly. No.

“It was already balanced,” she continued. “You didn’t need to wake it.”

She removed his adjustments without ceremony and reset the tray.

Silence returned. The room exhaled.

Ananse stayed very still.

Had he confused movement with mastery?
Is improvement always an addition?
And how do you know when something is already complete?

Well… that is a story for another time.
