Ananse & The Things Left Behind

A tale as rich as chocolate, as clever as Ananse…

By October, the village had changed its voice.

The loud work was finished. Cocoa sacks no longer leaned against doorways. The road had swallowed what it would swallow, leaving behind a fine red dust that settled slowly on everything else.

What remained sat quietly.

A worn basket rested near the stream, its handle thinned from years of use. A length of frayed rope lay coiled beneath a tree. Empty fermentation boxes were stacked nearby, their wood darkened by heat and time.

Ananse wandered through it all, hands clasped behind his back.

“No one guards leftovers,” he said, pleased.

He nudged the basket with his foot. Lifted the rope and shook his head.
“These,” he declared, “are finished.”

Nearby, an elder sat beneath a neem tree, sorting kola nuts into small piles, testing each one with practiced fingers.

“That basket,” the elder said without looking up, “fed three families.”

Ananse paused.

Later, as the sun dipped lower, women returned carrying small things — not sacks, just bowls. A handful of beans kept back. A little paste scraped from the bottom of a pan.

Enough for one last pot.

Cocoa was brewed quietly. Not for trade. Not for counting.

The smell was gentle now — thinner than during harvest, softened by air and time. Cups were small. Conversation slower.

Ananse took one.

The cocoa tasted different this way. Less polished. Less impressive.

But it stayed with him longer.

He looked again at the basket, the rope, the boxes that had done their work and been set aside without ceremony.

Perhaps, Ananse thought, not everything leaves when the season ends.

Had he mistaken leftovers for absence?
What do we stop seeing once the movement slows?

Well… that is a story for another time.
