A tale as rich as chocolate, as clever as Ananse...
The afternoon sun hung high over Midunu, its golden rays baking the red earth and making the air thick with the scent of ripening mangoes and the charcoal smoke from roadside grills. The people of the village fanned themselves under broad neem trees, sipping on cool glasses of sobolo, a cold hibiscus tisane, while children licked at melting treats before they could drip down their fingers.
But Ananse had no time for leisure. Today, he had succeeded in his most ambitious plan yet—he had finally outwitted the chocolatiers and stolen the finest truffles in all of Midunu.
His eight legs skittered swiftly across the dusty path as he carried his prize: a bundle of Preserved Lemon truffles, Wild Hibiscus bonbons, and Mint & Green Tea ganache, all wrapped carefully in banana leaves. He chuckled to himself. This time, he had won.
Or so he thought.
As he climbed to his favorite hiding spot—a shady nook beneath an ancient baobab tree—he felt something strange. The banana leaves were… damp? His many eyes widened as he unwrapped his stolen treasures. The chocolates were melting!
Ananse gasped. How could this be? The chocolates had been solid when he took them. Now, they were turning into a sticky, oozing mess before his very eyes. He tried fanning them, blowing on them, even weaving a delicate web to shield them from the sun, but it was too late.
A knowing laugh echoed from behind him. He turned to see an elder woman, sipping from a calabash of chilled palm wine, watching him with amusement. "Ah, Ananse," she said, shaking her head. "Chocolate is like wisdom—it must be handled with care. The finest things in life are not just about having them but knowing how to keep them."
Ananse groaned. Tricked by the sun!
He slumped against the tree, watching as the village bustled around him, the scent of roasted plantain and cocoa husks filling the air. He had finally grasped the finest chocolates, but in his greed, he had failed to appreciate their true nature.
Would he learn his lesson this time? Well… that is a story for another time.
