A tale as rich as chocolate, as clever as Ananse…
The village was already awake when Ananse arrived.
Cocoa pods lay split open beneath the trees, their white pulp shining in the morning light. Banana leaves had been folded carefully over wooden boxes, holding the beans in quiet warmth. Nearby, a shallow pan sat over low fire, cocoa nibs turning slowly, releasing a scent that carried farther than sound.
Ananse breathed it in.
“Ah,” he said. “So this is where it begins.”
Women moved easily between tasks. One adjusted the fire so it stayed low and even. Another listened closely as the nibs shifted, waiting for the right sound before stirring again. A third poured ground cocoa into warm water, whisking patiently until it thickened into something smooth and dark.
Ananse watched, restless.
“Too careful,” he muttered. “Heat should hurry things along.”
When no one was looking, he reached into the hearth and pulled out a burning stick. It flared brightly in his hand.
“There,” he said. “Now we’ll see.”
He pushed the fire closer to the pan. The nibs jumped. Smoke sharpened. The scent turned bitter.
A voice cut through the air.
“No.”
A woman stepped forward and gently but firmly returned the fire to its place. She lowered the pan, swept the nibs aside, and began again.
Ananse stepped back, startled.
“Fire doesn’t rush,” she said calmly. “Fire listens.”
Later, when the roasting was finished properly and the ground cocoa had cooled, cups were passed around. The drink was warm, not hot. Deep, not burnt.
Someone spoke a name as she handed a cup across the circle — a woman remembered, a legacy carried forward through hands and heat and time.
Ananse lifted his cup and drank.
This time, the warmth arrived slowly. It held. It stayed.
He said nothing.
Would he learn that cocoa, like stories, cannot be forced into being ready?
Or would he return, believing fire alone makes something valuable?
Well… that is a story for another time.
